Joanna McOwen is a contemporary visual artist known for her expressive, colourful oil and acrylic paintings inspired by the landscapes of rural and coastal Victoria.
From the wild phthalo-blue oceans of the Great Ocean Road (Eastern Maar Country) to the sweeping grasslands of Country Victoria, the rugged Gariwerd / Grampians Ranges (Djab Wurrung and Jardwadjali Country) and the expansive peaks of Victoria’s High Country (Taungurung and Gunaikurnai Country), her vibrant work captures the emotional energy, rhythm and colour of the places she calls home.
Originally trained in Textile Design (BA Hons, UK) and raised between the UK and outback South Australia, Joanna’s earliest memories of red dirt and dazzling skies shaped a lifelong connection to Country and a love of expressive, intuitive colour. She creates from her studios in Melbourne and Torquay, with her work described by the Associate Professor of Visual Arts at James Cook University as “taking her breath away.” Joanna’s paintings are collected worldwide, supported by exhibitions across Australia, commercial collaborations, and her sought-after Learn to Paint workshops held throughout Victoria.
